Catamaran sailing, pedalos, water skiing and snorkelling are some of the sports available from the beach. The heart of Waikiki Beach by the famous pink building that is the Royal Waikiki Hotel, one of two adjacent Sheraton hotels, the other being the Moana Surfrider, the first Waikiki hotel built in 1901. The Hilton Hawaiian Village is the largest of Hawaiian hotel with 2,522 rooms Kuhio Beach Park, extending from Waikiki Beach, is protected by a sea wall and offers a sheltered sandy bottom swimming lagoon ideal for small children or uncertain swimmers. This is the only place in Waikiki not backed by hotels with a small grass area and picnic area on the foreshore backed by Kalkaua Ave., the main road dissecting Waikiki. There is good surfing off the east end of the State Park and many surf schools to help get you going. Kapiolani Beach Park at the eastern end of Waikiki Beach offers the best body surfing in Waikiki. Kuhio Avenue runs through the heart of Waikiki and offers hotels, shops, bars and restaurants. Duke's Lane in the heart of Waikiki typifies the crass commercial side of this tourist haven, with plastic hula skirts, Hawaiian shirts and wooden carvings part of the tourist diet. There are over 100 high rise buildings on the 1 sq. mile that makes up Waikiki. The Waikiki Trolley offers free rides around Waikiki and charges a dollar to visit Ala Moana shopping or downtown Honolulu.
