The main island of Hawaii is Oahu, with the international airport at Honolulu on the dry leeward south side of the island falanked by two world famous icons - Pearl Harbour and Waikiki Beach. Waikiki Beach is renowned for its bustling atmosphere and all night shopping. Waikiki beach stretches for almost four miles in an almost unbroken stretch of soft white sand, and every day fills up with people. There are over a hundred high rise hotels to choose from and lots of smaller inns and units for rent but only a few of these are absolute beachfront. The area extends about five blocks inland before being blocked by the Alii Wai canal so wherever you stay you are never further than a five minute stroll to the beachfront. A few resorts are located to the west in Ala Wai Harbour and Ala Moana with its paved pathways, cove beach, joggers and fishermen and views of Downtown Honolulu, and to the east at Diamond Head and the peaceful Kaapiolani Park, Honolulu Zoo and Queen's surf beach.

The south east coast of Oahu is a wonderful scenic region with rocky coastline, volcanic craters, white sandy beaches and stunning rugged mountains where several world famous golf courses are located. The north coast of Oahu is the surfing region with its huge winter waves between November and March attracting the keenest of surfers. Central Oahu is dominated by pineapple plantations and the US navy and Army bases whilst west Oahu, with its lovely surfing beaches, is rural with a strong Hawaiian community.
